Nordic style appeared a century ago as a decorative current in the countries of Northern Europe: Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The objective was to compensate for the lack of light in that part of the world, and what started out as a necessity turned into a trend, taking its place as a reference in decoration in the 21st century. So much so that for over a decade, it has never seemed to go out of style. It has become a permanent trend.
In recent years it has entered with force in the majority of our homes and workplaces. Arne Korsbakken, owner of Korsbakken Trading As – the official Bathco distributor in Norway – is aware of this and asserts that “we are seeing this influence in magazines, television programmes and social media all over the world. It is very gratifying for architects and designers”.
The Nordic style is characterised by the luminosity of white, the presence of materials in their most natural state—particularly wood—and practical layouts to obtain diaphanous spaces. “Nordic style is light and robust at the same time; nature, wood and stone with soft, clean lines”. With those aspects as a reference, it’s a question of achieving a clean and spacious appearance. Korsbakken insists that “the majority of our customers are looking for practical solutions, […]. We sell a lot of washbasins from the Mini collection in Oslo, because in that city there are apartments with very small bathrooms and people need to take advantage of every centimetre of space”.
Meanwhile, the distinguishing feature of spaces is found in the colour of printed fabrics and in decorative pieces. The Norwegian distributor describes his customers’ preferences to us: “We have offered many washbasins in fine porcelain since they came on sale in 2016. Our best sellers from Bathco continue to be the Castellón porcelain washbasin and the black marble Catania. We also try to spread the word about all the possibilities in terms of patterns and finishes”.
On the other hand, it is clear that the bath is growing in importance, and Norwegian homes are no exception. “More and more space is being dedicated to the bath to achieve a zone similar to a spa, with rain shower heads, wall-mounted faucets and other attractive products that create that sensation of well-being.“
